What a music management agreement does

A management agreement sets out the deal between an artist and a manager: what the manager will do, how long it lasts, how they are paid and how it ends. It is one of the most important contracts in a music career, because it usually decides who earns from your income for years to come.

The terms that matter most

Commission is the first thing everyone looks at. In the UK a manager commonly takes around 20 percent, though this is always negotiable and can be higher for a new artist or lower for an established one. It also matters what the commission is taken from. Live income is often calculated after reasonable costs, while other income is often taken from gross receipts less agreed deductions.

Next is the term, meaning how long the deal lasts, and any sunset clause, which covers what the manager earns after the deal ends. A fair clause usually lets the manager keep earning on deals made during the term, at a reducing rate, but not on new work after it ends.

Also check the services the manager promises, how expenses are handled, how payments reach you and how either side can end the deal.

What this generator covers

The template is an editable sheet with clauses for commission structure, services, term and termination, payment terms, dispute resolution, confidentiality and intellectual property. Switch clauses on or off, change any wording, add your own and export a PDF.

It is useful for artists who are self-managing and bringing someone on, and for new managers who want a clear written starting point.

Questions to ask a manager first

Ask what they will actually do for you, who they already work with, how they will be paid and what they expect from you. Ask to speak to other artists they manage. A good manager will be happy to answer, and a manager who is vague about money is a warning sign.

Always get advice before signing

This is general information and a starting template, not legal advice. Management deals can last years and involve real money, so get independent advice from a music solicitor before you sign anything, and never sign the first draft you are handed.
