What is an ISRC?
An ISRC, or International Standard Recording Code, is a 12-character code that identifies one specific sound recording. It follows the recording around the world, so streaming services, radio and collecting societies can tell which recording was played and who to pay. It is made up of a country code, a registrant code for the rights owner, the year and a five-digit number for the individual recording.
Where do UK artists get ISRCs?
In the UK, PPL is the agency that issues ISRC registrant codes. You can ask for one when you join PPL as a recording rightsholder, and there is also an ISRC-only option for people who are not members. Many distributors will also assign codes when you upload a release, but check who owns the code, because it is tied to the rights owner. A new track from the same owner keeps the same registrant code and just gets a new number. Check the PPL website for current details.
ISRC, ISWC and tunecode: what is the difference?
These three are often confused. An ISRC identifies a recording. An ISWC identifies the underlying song, the words and music, and a tunecode is the unique code PRS for Music gives a song when you register it. Each version of a track, such as a radio edit or a remix, is a different recording, so it needs its own ISRC.
Why keep a tracker
Once you have released a few tracks it is easy to lose track of which code belongs to which recording, album and label. Missing or wrong codes cause missed payments and messy catalogue data. This tracker lets you log each code with the song title, artist, album, label, genre and notes, all saved to your account, so you can find any code in seconds when a distributor, PPL or PRS asks for it.
The tracker records your codes. It does not issue them. Never reuse a code for a different recording.
